As I do my usual weekly float around the stores, I have found myself on several occasions pausing over the vast array of denim shirts deliberately placed next to the jeans section. Will I look a fool if I attempt the whole denim and denim look, or fast track 15 years since this trend was last in, finally make it look cool?

Needless to say as a stylist it is in my DNA to follow fashion and no matter what the trend I will always find a way to adapt it to suit myself! Plus of course I have to trial these looks for my clients to ensure their wardrobe always look current too!

So the burning question then; How to pull off this all- American work man style without looking like a walking, talking Levi advert? My suggestion is mix it up completely with washed out shades of denim in the style dresses, jeans, shirts even bags and off set it with a little bit of navy for a stylish sophisticated twist.

Try teaming a slightly washed out denim shirt with a pair of battered boyfriend style slouchy jeans. To give your silhouette a feminine touch, cinch in waist with a slim belt but maintain utility chic by choosing a double wrap style.

Denim shirt, £25 by Dorothy Perkins. Navy Double Wrap belt, £45 by Reiss. Boyfriend vintage wash jeans, £75 by French Connection at asos.

Denim dresses are a godsend for laid back weekend style. Team with leggings and ballet pumps or a flattering pair of wedges. Cover up with a stylish navy boyfriend blazer. Alternatively choose a structured dress and it will be a modern twist for the office.

Short denim shift dress, £55 by Oasis. Structured denim dress, £160 by Karen Millen. Navy boyfriend blazer, £40 by Dorothy Perkins

Along side the obligatory winter coat, the knee high boot is another wardrobe necessity that sends us into a spin in a bid to be bang on trend for the winter.

If like me, you suffer from fat calf syndrome, boot shopping can be (quite literally) a painful experience! The whole jeans tucked into boots cool look quite frankly rubs salt in to the wound for those of us unable to pull it off. Like wise those that are lucky enough to have been blessed with slim pins, often find that the problem scale is tipped the other way with boots that look like wellies around the knees!

So what is the solution to this problem, besides finding a shop that makes boots in different calf widths which are usually anything but fashionable? The answer is simple, for once the shops have finally woken up and realised that not every one can carry off a knee high boot (don’t get me started on the thigh high boot) and have at long last produced a diverse range of styles to suit all lengths and widths of leg.

Shoe boots maybe a little passe nowadays, but the return of the slightly loose pull- on ankle boot and now the appearance of the ankle length lace up boot are a saving grace for many British legs. Long and lean or short and stumpy, both style of boots fit and work whether wearing a skirt, dress, jeans or trousers. Stick with black so that they can be teamed with black opaque tights to really help elongate and either create or enhance slimness. Opt for a block heel and either an ‘almond’ or round toe shape for ultimate comfort that won’t run the risk of ruining the line of the leg and keep detailing to a minimum. Plus if like me, you would love to be able to pull off the jeans-tucked-into-boots, it is possible to achieve. Secure jeans in place with socks and then pull boots on – I promise it looks very stylish in a slightly 80′s way. Just make sure socks are not visible!

Oasis Coat £130

Finally it seems that the winter months are drawing in and I have many of you asking for advice on the best coats for this season. As you all know, the winter coat is a bit like booking a last minute holiday deal - you gotta grab it before it goes! Come late October when the cold weather really begins to set in there is a flurry of coat buying action which always ends in the same old story; make-up stained collars, falling off buttons and only odd sizes left!

Be style savvy and get ahead of the game for the next couple of weeks by getting your coat sorted NOW!!! No matter what your budget, the good old British High Street boasts some of the best designs in styles to suit every shape. My advice is to opt for a thigh or knee length version if you intend to get good cost per wear. Don’t get me wrong, cropped waisted coats are great but they are not as versatile as a longer line when thinking about teaming with your various outfits.

Naturally black is best but all the same a little too on the safe side. Spice the wardrobe up and choose a bright colour or even a quirky print that will compliment and perk up your complexion once the tan has completely faded. (After all you will be wearing it eveyday for a good 4 months!) Don’t worry about working out if it will go with all the other colours in the wardrobe as 9 times out of 10 all of your bottoms are in dark shades and your top half won’t matter as it will be covered by the coat!

General rules of thumb on shape and shade are that purple and red are THE colours of winter 09 and fortunately work on practically all colourings depending on the density of the colour. Those brave enough mustard is also so hot right now. However for ultimate effect, it is best suited to pale blondes or very dark skin tones. Shape-wise coats that nip in at the waist before flaring out over the hip; as well as swing jackets and capes are all best suited to curvy women whilst slim straight cuts and tulip styles work wonders on slim straight women.

Here are my top 5 I have found on the high street:

1. Red swing coat, £160 by French Connection www.frenchconnection.com

2. Plum pea coat, £65 by Wallis www.wallis.co.uk

3. Single brested dogtooth coat, £90 by Warehouse www.warehouse.co.uk

4. Mustard cocoon coat, £175 by French Connection www.frenchconnection.com
